NASA is constantly exploring space and conducting aeronautics research. A core part of its job also involves analyzing our planetary system along with exploring the Moon and Sun. To be able to carry out these different space-related tasks easily, NASA appoints certain research teams that work together to research around the Moon, asteroids, and other space objects. And now, NASA has selected eight new research teams to help collaborate with research around space science and human space exploration as a part of the Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI).

SSERVI will be offering support to the newly selected teams for five years at a total of about $10.5 million per year which is funded by NASA’s Science and Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorates. These teams will be joining the existing four SSERVI teams to conduct research about the “Moon, near Earth Asteroids, and the Martian Moons Phobos and Deimos and their near space environments”. The SSERVI team members range from academic institutions and private companies to NASA centers and others. Also, the teams were selected after an extensive review from a pool of about 24 proposals.

Some of the team include Center for Lunar and Asteroid Surface Science (CLASS), Institute for Modeling Plasmas, Atmospheres, and Cosmic Dust (IMPACT), and Center for Lunar Science and Exploration (CLSE) among others. CLASS would be led by Dan Britt, University of Central Florida, Orlando and would focus on studying regolith across planetary bodies including Moons, Asteroids, et al. Similarly, IMPACT would be led by Mihaly Horanyi, University of Colorado Boulder, and would measure micron-sized dust impacts in icy regolith. And CLSE, led by David Kring, Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston would analyze distribution and form of volatiles from the early solar system to the creation of Moon.

“We are extremely pleased that the community responded with such high-quality proposals, and look forward to the many contributions new SSERVI team members will make in addressing NASA’s science and exploration goals,” said Greg Schmidt, the Institute’s director at Ames.
